Start times and dress codes
The wedding banquet is Taipei's set-piece occasion: an evening of many courses at round tables in a restaurant or banquet hall, toasts that travel from table to table, and a red envelope of cash as the expected gift. Company dinners start around six or half past. Day to day the city dresses casually, even in Xinyi, so an invitation that names a dress code means it and is worth reading closely. Tipping is not expected anywhere you are likely to be.
Getting to the venue
The MRT reaches most venues, is clean and inexpensive, carries English signs and runs until around midnight; one EasyCard covers it, the buses and the YouBike scheme. Covered arcades line most older streets, which keeps formal clothes dry in a city this wet, and after a late banquet a taxi is easy to find in the centre. If the day adds sightseeing, allow for the Maokong gondola, about twenty minutes up to the tea houses, and for the Elephant Mountain steps, a real climb and no place for formal shoes.
When the Taipei calendar fills
October to December is cool, dry and a popular stretch for weddings, while Ghost Month, the seventh lunar month and usually around August, is one many families avoid for them. May and June bring the plum rains. July to September is hot, humid and typhoon season: a typhoon day is announced the evening before and closes offices and events alike. Winter is mild but damp. The weeks before Lunar New Year fill with company year-end banquets, and the holiday itself is spent with family.

Taking a date to an occasion in Taipei
What should my date know before a Taiwanese wedding banquet?
Who the couple are, how you know them and where you are seated. The red envelope goes to the reception desk as you arrive, the courses keep coming for a couple of hours, and the couple will usually come round to toast each table. Brief her on those few things and the evening runs itself.
What is a weiya dinner?
A company's year-end banquet, held in the weeks before Lunar New Year, with speeches, prize draws and a long meal. If you want a plus-one there, check that partners are invited and ask for availability early, because many companies hold theirs in the same few weeks.
What if a typhoon falls on the day of my event?
When the city declares a typhoon day, most events are postponed, and the announcement comes the evening before. If your occasion is between July and September, agree a fallback date in the plan so a cancelled banquet does not mean starting again.
