Start times and dress codes
Johannesburg is the country's business capital, and its occasions follow that rhythm: corporate dinners from about seven in Sandton or Rosebank, galas with formal dress codes, and weddings that often begin in the afternoon at venues on the city's edges. People dress well here, a notch smarter than elsewhere in South Africa. At about 1,750 metres the evenings turn cool quickly, which matters for any event that ends outdoors.
Getting to the venue
This is a driving city, and ride-hailing door to door is the standard way to reach a venue, particularly at night. The Gautrain links Rosebank, Sandton, Pretoria and OR Tambo airport quickly, but it does not run late, so it suits arriving at an evening event rather than leaving one. Venues outside the city, in the Magaliesberg or the Cradle of Humankind, are an hour or so by car.
When the Johannesburg calendar fills
Summer, October to March, is wedding season, with afternoon thunderstorms most days that usually pass within the hour — worth planning around for an outdoor ceremony. November and early December are the busiest weeks for year-end functions, before many residents leave for the coast. Winter, June to August, is dry and sunny by day and cold at night.

Taking a date to an occasion in Johannesburg
What dress code should she expect at a Sandton function?
Usually a smart one: business formal for corporate dinners, black tie for galas. Tell us exactly what the invitation says, and she will match it.
Where should we meet before the event?
A public café in Rosebank or Parkhurst, close to most venues and easy to reach by car. Meeting an hour early leaves time to agree how you will introduce each other.
Will an afternoon storm affect an outdoor wedding?
It may interrupt it briefly. Summer storms build quickly in the afternoon and clear within the hour, so most venues have a covered fallback; your date should bring shoes and a layer that can cope.
