Where to meet before the event in Lyon

  • Vieux Lyon
  • the Presqu'île
  • the Croix-Rousse
  • the Confluence

Start times and dress codes

Lyon sits down earlier than Paris, around half past seven with nine already late, and treats its food more seriously than almost anywhere in France. A formal dinner here is about the cooking more than the room, and dress is neat and unshowy rather than glamorous. Between the two rivers there are easy, public places to meet before the event: the Rhône banks are laid out for walking and stay busy, while the Saône side is quieter for talking.

Getting to the venue

Four metro lines run until around midnight, Line C among them, a rack railway that climbs the Croix-Rousse hill, and two funiculars rise from Vieux Lyon, one to the basilica above it, so a venue on a hill never means climbing it in formal shoes. The Presqu'île between the rivers is flat and walks from Terreaux to Perrache in about twenty-five minutes. A finish after the metro has stopped is a taxi.

When the Lyon calendar fills

May to early October is the comfortable stretch for an event, although the valley holds the heat in July and August, when much of the city is away. The Fête des Lumières in early December changes everything: four evenings of lit buildings and large crowds, and the week that books up before any other. Plan a December occasion around it, or deliberately into it.

Taking a date to an occasion in Lyon

Is a bouchon a good choice for dinner with my date?

For a relaxed meal, yes; for a formal occasion, rarely. A bouchon is Lyon's traditional dining room, small, loud, generous and rich, with the tables close together. It suits the dinner after an event better than the event itself.

Where should we meet before an event in Vieux Lyon?

On the Presqu'île side, at a café near Place Bellecour or along the Saône quays, then cross one of the footbridges together. It is public, flat and easy to find, and the walk over the river is a natural start to the evening.

How does the Fête des Lumières affect an occasion?

For four evenings in early December the centre fills with visitors and every journey takes longer. If your occasion falls that week, ask for availability early and add time to each leg of the plan.
