Start times and dress codes
Porto is a working city that turns sociable after dark rather than one that performs all day. Dinner is around eight, plainer and less expensive than in Lisbon, and the north dresses a shade more conservatively than the south, worth remembering when choosing what to wear to a wedding or a work dinner. Everything faces the Douro: the city climbs away from the river on both banks, so how far uphill the venue sits is the first thing to check.
Getting to the venue
The metro is mostly light rail above ground, and its most useful stretch crosses the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge; the lower deck carries the road, and both decks take people on foot. Historic tram line 1 still runs along the river to Foz do Douro as a working service. The gradient is what a map hides: between the Ribeira and the centre there are stairs, the funicular beside the bridge or a taxi, and in formal shoes the last two are the sensible choices.
When the Porto calendar fills
May to September is the reliable half of the year and the main season for weddings, many of them at quintas up the Douro valley. The Atlantic makes Porto wetter than Lisbon, and from November to March the rain moves events indoors without cancelling them. São João, on the evening of 23 June, overrides every other plan: the whole city celebrates in the streets until the small hours, and nothing near the centre runs quietly.

Taking a date to an occasion in Porto
Should we meet on the Porto side or in Vila Nova de Gaia?
On the side the event is on. Gaia is the far bank of the Douro, a separate city on paper and five minutes on foot over the bridge, with the port lodges and the best view back at Porto. For an event in Porto, meet in Cedofeita or near the Ribeira; for one in Gaia, cross together while it is light.
How steep is the walk to a venue?
Often steeper than it looks. The Ribeira sits at the water and the centre well above it, joined by stairs, the funicular or a long way round. Foz do Douro and Cedofeita are flatter, which helps if either of you is in formal shoes.
What happens on São João?
On the evening of 23 June the whole city celebrates in the streets until the small hours, and the centre is crowded and loud. An occasion that evening becomes part of the festival whether it means to or not, so settle the journey home before you set out.
