Start times and dress codes

Delhi keeps earlier hours than Mumbai: dinner is usually between eight and half past nine and many restaurants wind down by half past eleven, though a wedding can run far later. Weddings are the city's great occasion, often several functions over more than one day in banquet halls and on farmhouse lawns, each with its own dress code. In winter the afternoons are the best part of the day, so a daytime function here is a pleasure rather than a compromise.

Getting to the venue

The Metro is clean, air-conditioned and reaches most places you would actually go, which makes Delhi the rare Indian city where neither of you needs a car to get about the centre. South Delhi and the centre are twenty minutes apart on it and far longer by road at six in the evening. Venues on the city's edge are the exception: for a farmhouse function, book a car both ways and allow for the traffic.

When the Delhi calendar fills

October to March is the season: pleasant weather, and a calendar full of weddings, exhibitions and outdoor evenings, with the winter wedding dates the most sought-after of the year. May and June are hot enough to move everything indoors or into the early morning. Air quality in November is poor enough to plan around, which mostly means choosing indoor venues.

Taking a date to an occasion in Delhi

What should my date know before a Delhi wedding?

Which of the functions you are attending, since a wedding can include several, such as a mehendi, a sangeet and the ceremony, each with its own timing and dress code. Send her the invitation details and which side of the family you know, and she can dress for the part of the celebration you are at.

Where should we meet before the event?

Khan Market or Hauz Khas, each with quiet public cafés a short walk from the Metro. Connaught Place is central and easy to find if either of you is new to the city.

How far ahead should I book in the wedding season?

A week or more between October and March, and longer around the most popular wedding dates, when many evenings across the city are taken at once. Outside the season three or four days is usually enough.
