Start times and dress codes
Auckland's occasions are relaxed in tone even when the invitation is formal. Weddings are often held at vineyards, on the islands of the gulf or on the coast west and north of the city, with an afternoon ceremony and a reception that runs into the evening; a work function usually starts straight after office hours. Dress codes are lighter than in Europe, but the weather is changeable at any time of year, so an outdoor ceremony needs a fallback.
Getting to the venue
Auckland is a car city, and the motorways around the harbour bridge decide how long any journey takes at rush hour. Waiheke Island, a popular wedding destination, is about forty minutes from the downtown ferry terminal, and Devonport about twelve. For a vineyard to the west or north, book a car for the day and agree the return time before you set off.
When the Auckland calendar fills
Wedding season runs from November to April, the warm months, and peaks in the summer holidays. December fills with work parties before much of the city leaves for the beach between Christmas and mid-January. Winter is mild and wet and the quietest season for events; Matariki, the Māori New Year public holiday in June or July, is the main midwinter date.

Taking a date to an occasion in Auckland
How do we get to a wedding on Waiheke?
By ferry from the downtown terminal, about forty minutes, and then usually a shuttle or taxi on the island. Check the last ferry back before the day, because the timetable can end earlier than a reception does.
Where should we meet before the event?
Britomart, beside the ferry terminal, or a café on Ponsonby Road. Both are central and public, and Britomart is the natural choice when the event starts with a crossing.
What if the weather turns?
It often does. An outdoor ceremony here usually has an indoor fallback, and your date should bring a layer and shoes that cope with grass or gravel. The plan notes both.
