Start times and dress codes

Bali is one of the region's best-known places for a destination wedding, and most follow the light: a ceremony in the late afternoon, timed so the photographs catch the sunset a little after six, then dinner and a reception into the evening. Dress codes are lighter than at home — linen and summer formal are normal — but a temple visit needs a sarong, a sash and covered shoulders. Ceremonies and processions are frequent across the island, and a road closed for one is part of planning any day here.

Getting to the venue

There is no railway and very little public transport, so guests travel by car, and a driver booked for the whole day is the reliable choice. Journey times are longer than the map suggests: Seminyak to Ubud is an hour or more, and the roads around Canggu and Uluwatu slow down in the late afternoon — exactly when wedding guests are on the move. Ride-hailing apps work in many places but not all, because some villages reserve pickups for local drivers.

When the Bali calendar fills

The dry season, April to October, is wedding season and the busiest time on the island, with July and August at the peak. The wet season, November to March, brings short, heavy afternoon showers, so an outdoor ceremony needs a covered fallback. Nyepi, the Day of Silence, usually in March, closes the entire island for twenty-four hours, airport included: no event is held and no one travels that day.

Taking a date to an occasion in Bali

Can she come to a destination wedding in Bali?

Yes. Tell us the venue, the date and the dress code. The plan sets out the day itself, the journey to the venue and the hour it ends, and the arrangement stays strictly platonic from start to finish.

Where should we meet before the ceremony?

A public café near the venue, with time to spare for the traffic. Seminyak and Sanur are easy for most coastal venues; for a ceremony in the hills around Ubud, meet in the town itself before driving out together.

What if the wedding falls near Nyepi?

Check the date first. On Nyepi the whole island stops for twenty-four hours, and the evening before is busy with ogoh-ogoh parades that close roads, so travel on either side of it needs extra time.
