Start times and dress codes
Most occasions here are built around the heat. A Thai wedding often comes in two parts, a morning ceremony with the families and an evening reception for everyone else, and a work dinner or a gala rarely sits down before seven. From late morning to mid-afternoon nobody plans anything outdoors, so the hours before an evening event are best spent somewhere air-conditioned. Reception dress is lighter in fabric than its European equivalent but still formal in cut, and if the day includes a temple, shoulders and knees are covered for both of you.
Getting to the venue
Plan the route to the venue around the rail lines rather than the roads. The elevated BTS Skytrain and the underground MRT reach most of the city and both close around midnight; above them, rush-hour traffic can turn a short drive into the longest part of the evening. For a venue by the Chao Phraya, the express boats are often the more dependable way to Charoenkrung and the old town. After a late reception a car booked through an app is the usual way home, and each of you takes your own.
When the Bangkok calendar fills
The cool, dry months from November to February are when Bangkok's calendar is fullest: the kindest weather for an outdoor reception or a riverside dinner, and the run of year-end parties and functions. March to May is the hot season, with April close to forty degrees. From roughly June to October the monsoon brings a heavy hour of rain most afternoons, enough to flood some streets on the way to a venue. Songkran in mid-April takes over the city for several days; an occasion that week needs a wide margin and a change of clothes.

Taking a date to an occasion in Bangkok
How early should we meet before a reception in Bangkok?
Earlier than the distance suggests. A public café in Sathorn or Thonglor an hour or so before the reception gives you time to go over names and the plan, and leaves room for the traffic. If the venue is by the river, meet near a pier or a Skytrain station and let the boat or the train do the crossing.
What should my date wear to a Thai wedding?
Tell her the dress code on the invitation and she can plan to it. Guests usually avoid all-black, which is associated with mourning, and anything revealing; if part of the day is at a temple, shoulders and knees stay covered.
Does the rainy season change an evening event?
It changes the journey more than the event. The downpours are short but heavy, and flooded roads slow everything behind them, so between June and October allow extra time to reach the venue and keep a way home that does not depend on one road.
