Start times and dress codes
Sydney's occasions are relaxed in tone and early in the day. A wedding often holds its ceremony in the afternoon, sometimes outdoors by the water, with the reception running on into the evening; a work function tends to start straight after office hours, around half past five or six. Cocktail dress codes are read lightly here, and a suit is often worn without a tie. A harbour-side venue is usually windier than the invitation suggests, so a layer belongs in the brief.
Getting to the venue
Many of the city's event venues sit around the harbour, and the ferries and trains from Circular Quay reach most of them; an Opal card or a contactless bank card covers every leg. For a venue out of town — the Hunter Valley, a popular wedding region, is about two hours north — a booked car is the sensible plan. Arrange the ride home before the evening starts: after midnight the trains thin out and night buses take over some routes.
When the Sydney calendar fills
Spring and autumn are wedding season — September to November and March to May — when the weather is warm but not fierce. December fills with end-of-year work parties, and New Year's Eve on the harbour is the most crowded night of the year. Summer, December to February, suits outdoor ceremonies that start late in the afternoon; winter is mild and the quietest stretch for events.

Taking a date to an occasion in Sydney
What does an outdoor wedding by the harbour need?
Mostly planning for the elements. Ceremonies in the open are common, so your date should know whether there will be grass or sand underfoot, how long guests stand and whether the reception moves indoors. The plan you agree before the day covers the timings, the dress code and when you both leave.
Where should we meet before the event?
In a public café near the venue, an hour or so before it starts. Surry Hills and Paddington suit an inner-city venue; for one on the harbour, somewhere near the ferry wharf you will leave from keeps the timing simple.
Is a work Christmas party a reasonable booking?
Yes, and December is when people ask. Tell us the venue, the start time and how you would like your date introduced; she arrives briefed, stays as long as you agreed, and the arrangement stays strictly platonic throughout.
