A man in a white shirt and his date, a woman in a trench coat, talking as they sit on seaside rocks in the low evening sun.

Hiring a date for the occasion — explained

What to tell people about your plus-one

4 min read

Keep it simple and agree it beforehand: a first name, how you know each other, and one true detail. Your date follows the story you agree, never volunteers the arrangement, and changes the subject as easily as you do.

The simplest stories work best

  • "This is Anna, a friend from the city"
  • "We met through friends a while ago"
  • "She is good company and was free this weekend"

Agree three things before the day

  • Her first name, and whether she uses her own
  • How long you have known each other
  • What she does, in one sentence
A man in a brown jacket and his date, a woman in a cream jacket, laughing side by side in a dry meadow with trees behind them.
Easy company, no pressure on either side.

Questions that will come

"How did you meet?" and "Are you two together?" are the usual ones. Decide the answers together; "we are friends" is true on the day and needs no follow-up.

What not to do

Do not invent an engagement, a long relationship or a shared past that relatives will ask about next year. A friend at the wedding is easy to explain; a fiancée who disappears is not.

Frequently asked questions

Will she pretend to be my girlfriend?

She will follow the introduction you agree, within the platonic rules. Most clients find "a friend" works better than a romance.

What if someone asks directly?

Agree an answer in advance. She will never volunteer the arrangement.

Can she meet my family?

Yes — that is often the point of the day. Brief her on who is who.
