Start times and dress codes

Marseille wears formality lightly and likes it that way. Dinner lands around eight, the Vieux-Port stays busy well after, and nobody dresses to be looked at, so a dress code on an invitation here is the exception and worth noting when it appears. The city stretches north to south along its coast rather than spreading out from a centre, and an evening event usually picks one stretch of that coast and stays there.

Getting to the venue

Two metro lines and three tram routes cover the middle of the city, but the metro stops earlier in the evening than in Paris, so a late dinner or reception ends in a taxi. The centre walks well and is hilly in places. Distance is easy to misjudge: the calanques at the southern edge are inside the city limits and still more than an hour from the Vieux-Port, by bus and then on foot, or by boat.

When the Marseille calendar fills

The sea stays warm into late September, which makes early autumn a better time for an outdoor event than high summer; July and August are hot and crowded. The mistral, a dry northerly that can blow for three days, brings brilliant light and an uncomfortable seafront, so any terrace plan needs an indoor alternative. From June to September the calanques close on days of high fire risk, decided and published the evening before.

Taking a date to an occasion in Marseille

Where should we meet before an event in Marseille?

In Le Panier or the Cours Julien, both walkable and full of public places to sit. The Vieux-Port is the obvious landmark and fine for finding each other, but it is a meeting point, not somewhere to spend an hour going over the plan.

Can an occasion include a trip to the calanques?

It can, with a fallback. Boats leave from the Vieux-Port, and the massif, a national park, is also reached by bus and on foot. In summer access closes whenever the fire risk is high, and that is decided only the evening before, so keep a second plan beside the first.

How does the mistral affect an outdoor event?

It can make a seafront terrace hard work for up to three days, though the light it leaves behind is spectacular. If your occasion is outdoors, ask the host what happens in a strong wind and tell your date to bring a warm layer.
