Start times and dress codes
A Neapolitan occasion is late and long. Dinner at nine is ordinary, a wedding lunch can carry on well into the evening, and nobody at the table expects to hurry. The city notices a good jacket and well-chosen shoes but rarely asks for black tie, so the wording on the invitation is the best guide; tell your date what it says and she can match it. Much of the city faces the sea, and a walk along the Lungomare before or after the event is part of the day rather than a detour.
Getting to the venue
Reaching Vomero means one of the funiculars, three of the city's four, or a great many stairs. Metro Line 1 is quick, and some of its stations were commissioned as artworks, but the metro and the funiculars both stop before a long dinner or a wedding is over, so the last journey home is a taxi. In the Centro Storico, walk: the lanes are narrow, the scooters are fast, and on foot you will usually arrive first.
When the Naples calendar fills
The comfortable months for an event are April to June and September to October, warm enough for a terrace and clear across the bay, and the same months most couples choose to marry. August is hot, and many neighbourhood places close for their own holidays. Winter is mild and wet, and the hydrofoils to the islands are cancelled when the sea is rough, which matters if the occasion is on Capri or Ischia.

Taking a date to an occasion in Naples
Can my date come to a wedding on one of the islands or near Sorrento?
It can, if the day is planned around the journey. Hydrofoils and ferries leave from the port and depend on the sea; Sorrento is about an hour away on the Circumvesuviana, which is frequent and inexpensive but crowded at busy times. Put the crossing times in the plan, and remember the booking is one full day.
Where should we meet before a dinner in Naples?
In Chiaia or on the Lungomare. Both are level, open and public, with cafés where you can go over the plan, and the seafront fills any spare half hour. The Centro Storico is wonderful but crowded, so better as a place to pass through than a meeting point.
How far ahead should I book for a Naples occasion?
A few days covers most dates. Weekends in spring and early autumn, the busiest for weddings, go faster, and anything that depends on a crossing to the islands is better settled early.
