Where to meet before the event in Manila

  • Bonifacio Global City
  • Poblacion
  • Salcedo Village
  • Intramuros

Start times and dress codes

Traffic decides the schedule for any occasion here. Dinner is around seven, receptions and company parties fill the evening, and Poblacion carries on later than the business districts do. Filipino weddings are generous: many guests, a long programme, and often a church ceremony before the reception. For men the Barong Tagalog counts as formal wear, so an invitation that asks for it is a dressy one. Malls double as the city's public living room, air-conditioned and open until nine or ten.

Getting to the venue

Each business district is easy to walk inside and slow to leave. BGC and Makati are four kilometres apart, which can mean twenty minutes or ninety, and anything that crosses EDSA after five in the afternoon costs an hour. Ride-hailing is the normal way to arrive dressed for an event. The MRT and LRT are quick and inexpensive but crowded, no place for formal clothes; the Pasig River ferry, the one route the roads cannot slow, reaches Intramuros.

When the Manila calendar fills

December to February is cool and dry. The Christmas season, which Filipinos begin as early as September, puts the year's company parties and reunions into November and December, when the malls and the roads are at their busiest. March to May is hot. The rainy season from June to November brings typhoons, forecast a few days ahead, which can shut offices and roads for a day or two.

Taking a date to an occasion in Manila

Can we get from Makati to an event in BGC on a weekday evening?

Yes, but allow far more time than the distance suggests: four kilometres can take an hour and a half at the wrong moment. The better plan is to meet in the district where the event is, so the only long journey is the one home.

What should my date know before a Filipino wedding?

That the programme is long and lively, with plenty of guests and often a church ceremony first. Some receptions include a money dance, when guests pin notes to the couple's clothes. Tell her how you know the couple and when you mean to leave, and she will follow the programme with you.

What if a typhoon is forecast for the day?

Typhoons usually give two or three days' warning, and when one arrives the city stops: offices close, roads flood, flights move. If your occasion falls between June and November, write a second date into the plan in case the first one is lost.
