Start times and dress codes
Kuala Lumpur's occasions draw on three traditions, and the invitation usually tells you which one you are going to. A Malay wedding reception is often a daytime affair with guests coming and going; a Chinese wedding dinner is an evening banquet of many courses; an Indian wedding may begin early in the morning. Work dinners start around eight. Dress is smart within the limits the heat allows, covered shoulders are the safer choice away from the malls, and Friday early afternoon stays quiet while prayers finish.
Getting to the venue
Three rail systems, the LRT, the MRT and the Monorail, share one Touch 'n Go card but do not always connect, and some interchanges mean a walk outside. An air-conditioned walkway links Bukit Bintang to KLCC, the one long stretch that suits formal clothes on foot. Elsewhere, distances that look walkable seldom are, with gaps in the pavement and constant heat, and e-hailing costs little enough that most guests simply book a car to the door.
When the Kuala Lumpur calendar fills
There is no dry season, only wetter months: March to April and September to November bring the heaviest afternoon storms, sudden and usually over within the hour. Temperatures hardly change through the year, and haze drifts in during some late summers. Festivals set the calendar. During Ramadan social life moves to after sunset and the evening bazaars; Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali each bring a round of open houses and close many businesses for a few days.

Taking a date to an occasion in Kuala Lumpur
What should my date know about a festival open house?
That it is informal and generous. During Hari Raya, Chinese New Year or Deepavali, hosts welcome guests over several hours and people come and go. Arrive within the hours given, accept what is offered, dress modestly, and plan to stay an hour or two rather than the whole afternoon.
How do we handle the afternoon rain on the day of an event?
Plan around it rather than against it. Storms build fast, drop a great deal of water for an hour and stop, and so much of the city is connected under cover that an event rarely stops for it. Book the car a little earlier than you need, and meet somewhere indoors.
Where should we meet before the event?
Somewhere public and air-conditioned in Bangsar or KLCC, a café or a mall atrium. Both are easy to reach by rail or by car, and from KLCC the covered walkway puts a venue in Bukit Bintang within reach without stepping into the heat.
