Start times and dress codes
Seoul's occasions run to time and often finish sooner than visitors expect. A wedding in one of the city's wedding halls is brisk: the guests greet the families, the ceremony is short, and the meal follows soon after. A company dinner opens around half past six and often moves on to a second or third venue rather than ending at the first. Neat and coordinated counts for more than showy, and some older restaurants have you take your shoes off, so choose shoes with that in mind.
Getting to the venue
The subway is the way to most venues: it reaches nearly every district, is signposted in English as well as Korean, and one T-money card pays for trains and buses. Trains from the outer stations stop around midnight, and the half hour after that is when a taxi is hardest to get, so arrange the ride home before a late event ends. The Han splits the city, with Gangnam to the south and Hongdae and Itaewon to the north, and crossing at the wrong hour adds half an hour; meet on the venue's side of the river.
When the Seoul calendar fills
Spring and autumn are the busy seasons here, and the favourite ones for weddings. Early April brings cherry blossom along the Han and around Yeouido; late October into November turns the palace grounds gold. Between them, the jangma rains of late June and July and a humid August make outdoor plans harder, and January is cold and dry. Seollal and Chuseok send the country home for several days, so events stop in those weeks while the roads out of the city fill.

Taking a date to an occasion in Seoul
What happens at a wedding in a Seoul wedding hall?
It moves quickly. Guests arrive, greet the families, often hand over a gift of money at a desk by the entrance, watch a short ceremony and go through to a meal. Your date needs to know who the couple are, how you know them and when you plan to leave, and the plan you agree before the day covers all three.
Will a company dinner go on somewhere else?
Often. A team dinner commonly moves from the restaurant to a second place and sometimes a third, and leaving after the first is not taken as rude. Agree beforehand how long your date stays, after the meal or after the second stop, so the goodbye is planned rather than improvised.
Where should we meet before the event?
Somewhere public on the same side of the river as the venue. A café in Seongsu-dong, Hannam-dong or Yeonnam-dong suits an event north of the Han; for one in Gangnam, choose a café by the venue's station, because crossing the river at rush hour is what makes people late.
