Hiring a date for the occasion — explained

What "plus one" on an invitation means

3 min read

"Plus one" on an invitation means the host has saved a second seat for a guest of your choosing — it does not have to be a partner. You tell the host the guest's name when you reply, and you are responsible for them on the day. If you have nobody to bring, going alone is always acceptable.

Who you can bring

  • A partner, a friend or a relative
  • Someone the host does not know, unless the invitation says otherwise
  • A hired date, introduced as a friend, if you choose

How to reply

  • Reply by the RSVP date with your guest's name
  • Mention dietary needs for both of you
  • If you are going alone, say so — the host can free the seat

Easy company, no pressure on either side.

If you have nobody to bring

Go alone — hosts expect it. If the seat beside you will be noticed all day, a hired date is an option: a verified, strictly platonic guest, briefed on the names and introduced as you agree.

Frequently asked questions

Is a plus-one expected to bring a gift?

Usually one gift from both of you is enough.

Can I bring a plus-one if the invitation does not say so?

No. Ask the host first; the seat may not exist.

Do I have to name my guest?

Yes, when you reply — for the seating plan and the place cards.
